Privacy and Cookies

How to Winterize Garden (howtowinterizegarden.com) is a gardening website written and run by Miranda Porter in the United States. In this policy, “I,” “me” and “my” mean Miranda Porter. I have kept it in plain language so you know what information is collected when you visit and what you can do about it.

Information You Send Me

If you email me at [email protected], I receive your email address, your name if you include it and anything you write or attach. I use it only to reply to you and, if you report an error, to correct the article.

I do not add you to a mailing list, and I do not sell or share your email with anyone. Old correspondence gets deleted once it no longer serves a purpose.

The contact page explains what to include when sending a gardening question or reporting an error.

Information Collected Automatically

Google Analytics

I use Google Analytics to see which articles people read and how they find the site. It uses cookies and similar technology to collect information such as the pages you visit, how long you stay, your device and browser type, the website that referred you and your approximate location.

I see summary reports and cannot identify individual visitors. Google states that Google Analytics 4 does not log or store IP addresses. You can block Google Analytics with the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.

Google Search Console

Google Search Console shows me which searches lead people to the site, along with clicks and impressions in Google Search results. It does not place cookies on your device, and the data I see is aggregated.

Google AdSense

The site shows ads served by Google AdSense, which helps pay for hosting and the time I spend writing. Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website and other websites. Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and other sites on the internet.

You can opt out of personalized advertising through Google’s Ads Settings at adssettings.google.com. You can also opt out of some third-party vendors’ use of cookies for personalized advertising at aboutads.info/choices. You will still see ads after opting out, but they will be less tailored to your interests.

To learn how Google handles data, see Google’s Privacy Policy at policies.google.com/privacy and its explanation of how it uses information from sites that use its services at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.

Server Logs

The site’s hosting provider keeps standard server logs, which can include your IP address, browser type and the time of your visit. Those logs are used for security and to keep the site running.

Managing Cookies

Most browsers let you block or delete cookies in their settings. Blocking cookies will not stop the site from working, though ads may become less relevant.

Your Privacy Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask what personal information I hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, or to object to how it is used. Residents of some US states, the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom have specific rights under their local laws.

I do not sell personal information. To make a request, email me and I will respond within 30 days.

Children

The site is written for adult gardeners and is not directed at children under 13. I do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has sent me personal information, email me and I will delete it.

Links to Other Websites

Articles link to extension services, government pages and other websites. Those sites have their own privacy practices, which I do not control.

Changes to the Policy

If I add a new tool, such as a newsletter or comments, I will update the policy and change the date at the top. Your visit is also covered by the rules for reading, sharing and quoting my articles, which explain what you can and cannot do with the content. Privacy questions can go to [email protected].
